Description
Carausius. Romano-British Emperor, AD 286-293. Antoninianus (19mm, 2.63 g, 7h). ‘C’ mint. IMP CAR[AVSI]VS AVG, radiate and draped bust right / P M TR P IIII [COS P P], Roma, helmeted, seated left on shield, holding scepter and Victory right in outstretched right hand; [C]. RIC V –; BM 1994,1202.1 (same dies). Attractive green patina, smoothing scratches. Good VF. Extremely rare. Exceedingly rare with the date visible. See CNG 571, 1139 and 573, 744 for additional dated Carausius antoniniani of different types. Dated Carausius antoniniani are incredibly rare. This example excellent with the date visible unlike the CNG 571, 1139 and the BM examples (of that issue), which are likely from the same date though with a different reverse type. This coin superior in centering and strike to the BM 1994,1202.1 coin.

From the Dr. Malcolm Lyne Collection, purchased from Spink, 23 April 2001. Ex Nelson Bunker Hunt Collection: Important Greek and Roman Coins (Part IV, Sotheby’s New York, 19 June 1991), lot 910.
